1. Poker History

The origin of the game itself and even its name is still controversial. According to one version, the name comes from the German word pochen (to knock). The first mention of a game similar to poker dates back to the 16th century.

Poker as a card game has been around for over 450 years. It originated in Europe: in Spain, France, Italy. The rules have changed over time. The first written mentions of the modern version of this boards game appear in 1829 in the memoirs of the artist Joe Cowell. However, no matter how the rules changed, the winner was determined by the availability of combinations.

The way from 20 to 52 cards

There is a widespread theory that this board game was created based on a derivative of Poque. A derivative of the popular German bluffing game, the English game Brag was first introduced to America by colonists and traders, played with a 20-card deck.

In the 1800s, the deck of cards expanded from 20 to 52 cards. Five-card turned into a draw. For the first time, a flush (five cards of the same suit) was included in the order of the hands. In the 1860s, “straight”(five consecutive cards) was also added to the order of the hands.

As-Nas – The Poker Cousins

As Nas Cards

French sailors played Ace, an adapted version of the Persian game As Nas. The games were played with four people and each player was dealt five cards. The usual variant of As Nas involved five players using 25-card decks. Players placed their bets using ratings similar to today’s poker, except for straights and flushes. There were two kinds of As Nas: one of them was with five cards dealt, the other one was with multiple draws and betting rounds.
